Week #3 Lessons

Hi Everyone,

Week #3

Our third week of school is here! Hopefully everyone is getting used to the routine and is loving getting back to learning new things and meeting new people!

This week we will talk about all differents types of feelings and emotions that we might feel.  We will learn about new ones and revisit familiar ones.  Most importantly we will talk about the fact that we all feel different emotions everyday!  Remember, some classes may not have a chance to get through all of the activities that I have planned for that week.  But, that is okay!  They are always on our Google Classroom page for next time if we have the chance to go back.  I started  having grades 4 and 3 log on to our Google Classroom page so parents and teachers can be on the look-out for some great responses from their children!  I’m hoping to bring in the second graders in a few weeks!

So, what are we going to work on this week?

Let’s see!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In first grade we will begin by reading Today I Feel Silly.

This is a very funny book that talks about all of the different moods we could feel everyday.

Then we will play feelings memory,

Which I know they will love!

Next we will play a matching game with some colorful bags labeled with 8 feelings on them.  The students will hear a situation (for example Bryan is having a birthday party tomorrow).  Then, they will have to figure out which “feeling bag” that situation card belongs in.  I can’t wait to see how they do with this!

We will watch a cute Video about my favorite emotion - Happiness!  And will end with some Belly Breathing time :-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Second grade we will begin by reading a great book called My Many Colored Days.

This book will show us that certain colors can remind us of the feelings we are feeling.  Then we will get the chance to look at a bag of skittles and see the many colors in the bag and relate it to the many “colors” of our emotions.

Next, the groups will be playing emotion charades!  I can’t wait to see what great actors/actresses we have!

We will watch a cute Video about my favorite emotion - Happiness!  And will end with some calming Rainbow Breathing time :-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Third grade we will begin by playing a game called “Uncover” it.  The students will get the chance to guess letters in order to uncover the feeling word that was chosen.  Extra points will be given to the teams who can use the word in a sentence or share about a time when they experienced that feeling in their own lives.

We will watch a cute Video about my favorite emotion - Happiness!  And will end with some calming Chin Up relaxation time :-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Fourth grade we will begin by playing a game called “Uncover” it.  The students will get the chance to guess letters in order to uncover the feeling word that was chosen.  Extra points will be given to the teams who can use the word in a sentence or share about a time when they experienced that feeling in their own lives.

The next activity, if we have time, is called Emotion Bench.  Two students will be selected to sit on a “bench” in the front of the room and will be given a different emotion to act out.  The actors will then proceed with a conversation (being sure to portray what their emotion is the whole time).  Then the audience will try to guess what emotion they were given!

We will watch a cute Video about my favorite emotion - Happiness!  And will end with some calming Chin Up relaxation time :-)

At the end of each blog post will be a “Would you rather” type question.
Think about your answer and find out what your child’s answer is.
You might be surprised by what they say!!

Would you rather change the past or be able to see into the future?

Take care and see you next week!

Week #2 Lessons

Go Friendship!
Hi Everyone,

Week #2

I am so happy to have finished our first week and to have gotten the chance to meet so many wonderful boys and girls!  As an elementary School Counselor I now have about 475 new friends!  After, we finally have a Monday at school, that total will change to about 600!  Am I lucky or what?! :-)

Everyone at both schools were super nice and enthusiastic with our first week’s lesson!  We had a lot of fun, and I hope they left knowing more about me and how I can help them!

This week we will continue to get to know each other and start learning about how to be a friend.  Remember, some classes may not have a chance to get through all of the activities that I have planned for that week.  But, that is okay!  They are always on our Google Classroom page for next time if we have the chance to go back.  I will start having grades 4, 3, and maybe 2 log on to our page this week so parents and teachers can be on the look-out for some great responses from their children!

So, what are we going to work on this week?

Let’s see!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In first grade we will begin by reading How to Lose All Your Friends.

This is a very funny book that takes the opposite side of friendship and shows the kids how their behavior might affect the class.  We will also complete a hands on activity while we read this book that the kids will love!

Then we will read Friendshape,

Which the math teacher in me couldn’t resist!  After reading this book, we will talk about all of the GREAT ways we can be a friend!  And the student’s will get to make their own Friendshapes!  So, be on the look-out for those when they come home :-)

We will watch (and sing to!) 2 really sweet videos about friends next.  Here is a sneak preview to them!  First  and Second.

At the end of our lesson, we will do a great summary activity to help make sure the kids now know more about friendship!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Second grade we will begin by reading a great book called Peanut Butter and Cupcake.

After reading this book, we will be making an anchor list about how to make friends!

I can’t wait to hear what they add to the list :-)

Next, the groups will be creating their very own Friendship book, where they will have to think about how they will react in certain situations (like meeting a new friend at school etc.)  They are going to look great!

If we have time, the students will even get the chance to learn more about the friends they have in class by asking them funny questions!

We will watch (and sing to!) 2 really sweet videos about friends next.  Here is a sneak preview to them!  First  and Second.

At the end of our lesson, we will do a great summary activity to help make sure the kids now know more about friendship!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Third grade we will begin by (hopefully!) joining our Google Classroom page for Guidance!  That is where all of your children will house most of the work in Guidance class this year.

Last week I had the chance to show the kids my circle map (see the last blog post!) and explain how it was all about me, and this week the boys and girls will get to make one of their own using the chromebooks :-)

Next, we will have a conversation about what friendship means to them using this four-sqaure to help.

Then, the kids will get the chance to make their own “Friendship Ad”

to describe all of the qualities they like to see in a friend (and hopefully this will help them try to be that kind of friend to other people as well!)

We will watch (and sing to!) 2 really sweet videos about friends next.  Here is a sneak preview to them!  First  and Second.

At the end of our lesson, we will do a great summary activity to help make sure the kids know more about friendship!   It is in their Google Classroom page if you want to take a closer look at their answers.

In Fourth grade we will begin by (hopefully!) joining our Google Classroom page for Guidance!  That is where all of your children will house most of the work in Guidance class this year.

I am really looking forward to our first activity.  The groups will be creating and acting out their own skits!  They will have to choose someone to play the part of a new student in their class and then the skit will portray all of the ways we can welcome our new friend!

The next activity will be a silly one!  They will be writing “Glory Stories” featuring members of their class :-)  This will be a great activity to help students see each other in a different way!

At the end of our lesson, we will do a great summary activity to help make sure the  kids know more about friendship!   It is in their Google Classroom page if you want to take a closer look at their answers.

At the end of each blog post will be a “Would you rather” type question.
Think about your answer and find out what your child’s answer is.
You might be surprised by what they say!!

Would you rather have a pet tarantula
or a
pet sea snot cucumber?
They look cute on the Octonauts at least!

Take care and see you next week!
